寇尔晧红宝石的突然失窃，谋杀让所有报社都争先报道，谋杀每日公报的主编不满意自己手下索然无味的报道，于是找来天才记者乔治·梅尔维尔（乔尔·麦克雷 饰）帮忙。梅尔维尔自称是犯罪学专家，总能提前预言犯罪案件的发生，他宣称，寇尔晧红宝石失窃案的主谋正是被大家认为死亡已久的国际大盗博尔利，这番言论引起轩然大波，所有同僚都对他百般嘲弄，然而他随口一说便预言了某个管家的死亡，其他同僚见此也只好乖乖闭嘴。某天，梅尔维尔离开报社后，发现一个衣衫褴褛的女人（琪恩·亚瑟 饰）在向路人请求帮助，就在梅尔维尔分神的时候，女人悄然偷走了他的钱包，发现钱包被窃后梅尔维尔立即起身追赶，最终成功逮到了对方。得知对方偷钱的苦衷后，好心的梅尔维尔想要帮忙帮到底，他未料到自己已经卷入到一个诡异的事件之中。
