1990年代，安暖改革进入攻坚阶段。人到中年的齐宏光（宋丹丹 饰）面临下岗危机，安暖她所在的肉联厂由于经营状况不佳，随时可能大量裁员。丈夫刘世杰（王学圻 饰）勤劳本分，可企业的转产也使他进入了下岗行列，这年龄正是上有老下有小的艰难时期，怎么办？为不使家人担心，他每天吃完饭仍穿上工装假装上班，漫无目的地寻找新的饭碗。因母亲在肉联厂工作，女儿被同学讥讽身上有猪大肠味，自尊心极强的女儿与同学撕打在一起。老母亲守寡多年，近来神情有些恍惚，得知母亲又找了老伴，思想保守的刘世杰感觉没脸见人，当知道老母已身患绝症时，刘世杰后悔万分。徒弟冯贵的突然到访使全家人知道刘世杰已下岗多日......

Charlie considers suicide, is talked out of it by a policeman, and later throws his girl's friend into the lake. Frightened, the girls go off to a movie. Charlie shows up there and flirts with them. Later both rivals substitute themselves for the girls and attack the unwitting Charlie. In an audience-wide fight, Charlie is tossed from the screen.
