和丈夫争吵后，漂亮朋友一位丰盈的德裔女子独自留宿兼营咖啡馆的汽车旅馆。争吵时遗落的保温高压水壶盛满咖啡尾随她到来，漂亮朋友成了这场魔术的第一个道具。咖啡馆女老板的丈夫愤然离家，她无法理解儿子的音乐、无法接受女儿的时髦、无法忍受襁褓中的哭闹，只得游离在三个孩子的生活之外充当局外人；她经营的咖啡馆内没有咖啡机，吧台积满灰尘；她管理的旅馆住着一位迟迟没有作品的画家，一位没有生意的纹身女郎。巴格达咖啡馆的女主人被生活的尘埃包裹，已经黯然失色，她无法再容忍一位不速之客。德裔女子将目睹的一切当作一股可以理解的迷惑，并执意留下。一场大扫除之后，巴格达咖啡馆成了沙漠中的彩虹；男装改成时髦女装帮女老板的女儿度过青春期；端坐一旁，听女老板的儿子的钢琴演奏；利用丈夫的魔术道具学习魔术，并为咖啡馆奉上余兴节目。德裔女子所作的事只是生活中的常态，但是在巴格达沙漠中的这个咖啡馆看来，着实是一场魔术。
