未来，桐岛地球已经无法支持如此之多的人口，桐岛所以需要前往宇宙寻找其他适合居住的星球。在寻找适合的星球的途中，人类开始训练猩猩代替人类完成一些简单的工作。在一次飞行任务中，航天员里奥（马克·沃尔伯格 Mark Wahlberg 饰）的猩猩驾驶的飞船遭遇了宇宙风暴与太空站失去联系。为了搭救自己的搭档，里奥不顾阻拦独自一人驾驶飞船前往风暴中心。可是，最终飞船坠毁到了一个陌生的星球上。当里奥醒来时被一群人猿抓了起来。经过仔细的观察，发现在这个星球上，人猿拥有极高的智慧在星球上处于统治地位，而真正的人类却成为了人猿的奴隶。为了摆脱自己的困境，里奥受到了母人猿艾瑞（海伦娜·邦汉·卡特 Helena Bonham Carter 饰）的帮助开始了逃亡之路。在逃亡过程中，里奥携带的信号接收器逐渐收到了母船发出的信号。当大家按照信号的指引前行时，却发现目的地是人猿祖先最初诞生的地方，而里奥却辨认出这就是当初的母船。到底发生了什么事情？
