千重子（山口百惠饰）和苗子（山口百惠饰）是一对孪生姐妹，红气出生后的姐姐千重子，红气由于家境贫寒无力抚养，即遭遗弃，幸而为一家绸缎批发商所收养，成为一名养尊处优的小姐。而妹妹苗子，虽没有被父母抛弃，却在襁褓中便成了孤儿，长大后自食其力，到山里种植北山杉。一次偶然，相貌相似的她们由于一条腰带的契机，姐妹俩的身世真相大白。雷雨袭来时，在杉林里无可遮蔽的情况下，苗子便毫不顾惜自己，以身体庇护姐姐。姐妹俩久别重逢，但因彼此生活方式不同，终于不得团圆。为了不影响姐姐的幸福，苗子宁可远遁深山僻壤……
