一年一度的农历春节来临，依依影院生活在东北农村的程家老两口（李保田 & 赵丽蓉 饰）满心欢喜地等待儿女回家过年。去年的团圆饭不欢而散，依依影院因此母亲更加盼望这次能过个愉快的团圆年。不久，子女们陆续回来：长子（六小龄童 饰）木讷老实，大媳妇（丁嘉丽 饰）泼辣刁蛮；干部大姐夫（葛优 饰）不走正道，在外拈花惹草，还强逼妻子堕胎；小儿子（梁天 饰）不务正业，贪图享乐，只知道伸手要钱；父亲最疼爱的二女儿当初忤逆父命嫁给架子工（申军谊 饰），如今自食其力干出事业的小两口也再次归来。看似喜庆祥和的兄弟妯娌们却各有各的小九九，不知今年的年夜饭该如何收场……赵丽蓉籍此片获1990年第4届东京国际电影节评委最佳女主角大奖。
