故事发生在1975年的冬天，果穗许秀云（斯琴高娃 饰）的丈夫郑百如抛弃了她，果穗三妹为了二姐的名声着想，给她介绍对象，然而许秀云坚决的拒绝了这门亲事，这让一家人都感到无法理解。实际上，许秀云十分同情自己的姐夫金东水（冯恩鹤 饰），大姐去世以后，金东水一直带着妻子留下的孩子，父子两人过着相依为命的生活。县里派出了工作组来到了村子里，郑百如知道自己蹦跶不了多久了，于是找到了许秀云希望两人能够复婚，然而早就看清了郑百如真面目的许秀云断然拒绝，这令郑百如感到羞愤难当，于是四处散布谣言，谎称许秀云和金东水有着不可告人的关系。
