What's the mystery link between 'marmalade' and 'One Direction'?The Joy of Data also hails the giant contribution of Claude Shannon, the American mathematician and electrical engineer who, in an attempt to solve the problem of noisy telephone lines, devised a way to digitise all information. It was Shannon, father of the 'bit', who singlehandedly launched the 'information age'. Meanwhile, the green lawns of Britain's National Physical Laboratory host a race between its young apprentices in order to demonstrate how and why data moves quickly and successfully around modern data networks. It's all thanks to the brilliant technique first invented there in the 1960s by Welshman Donald Davies - packet switching - without which there would be no internet as we know it.But what of the future, big data and artificial intelligence? Should we be worried by the pace of change, and what our own data could and should be used for? Ultimately, Fry concludes, data has empowered all of us. We must have machines at our side if we're to find patterns in the modern-day data deluge. 回复 :九州方面の旅から一週間振りに帰って来た桃次郎とジョナサンこと金造は、北海道行きのカーフェリーの出発時間を待つ間、川崎の金造の自宅に立ち寄った。ところが金造の妻・君江と9人の子供たちは、現在の6畳一間の家では狭すぎるので金造にもっと頑張って家を建ててほしいと要求した。おかげで金造は、カーフェリーに乗ってもラウンジでアルバイトするはめになった。一方、桃次郎は暇をもてあましていたのだが、美貌の女性・三上亜希子に一目惚れしてしまった。釧路に着いた桃次郎は、亜希子の顔が頭にこびりついてしまい他の女には目もくれないばかりか、港の魚市場で女トラック運転手の涼子を罵った。ところが涼子に惚れているカムチャッカの熊こと大野田太郎左衛門がこの事を聞いて怒り、熊と桃次郎はたちまち大喧嘩になった。しかし喧嘩の腕は互格のため、トラックで勝負することになった。だが、地の利に明るい熊に軍配が上り、桃次郎は北海道を直ちに去る約束をした。その帰り道、桃次郎は亜希子と再会した。亜希子は静内の牧場の娘で、両親を亡くし女の身一つで牧場を経営していた。亜希子にすっかり心を奪われた桃次郎は、熊との約束を忘れて、トラックはそっちのけで乗馬入門書にかじりつく始末。そんなある日、亜希子が一番可愛がっていた仔馬が病気になり、獣医も見離してしまった。そこで看病をかって出た桃次郎は、仔馬とともに一夜を明かし、その甲斐があって奇跡的に元気を取り戻した。亜希子は桃次郎のひたむきな献身振りに心を打たれるのだった。桃次郎は亜希子の感謝の言葉を背に釧路に戻った。というのも、桃次郎が北海道に居すわったのは涼子との仲が原因、と熊が勘違いしていたからだ。だが、涼子が自ら熊に愛を告白したため大事には至らなかった。桃次郎は金造夫婦のすすめもあり亜希子にプロポーズしようとしたのだが、彼女には既に結婚を約束した相手がいることを知り、ガックリしてしまう。そんな時、金造のアルバイト先の運送ブローカー・鮫田が金を持ち逃げしたため、荷が滞貨し、金造が困り果てていた。見るに見かねた桃次郎は、金造を勇気づけると、自らハンドルを握って、驀走するのだった。
