张大民（冯巩 饰）对工作敬业，成长对家庭负责。就算一家六口都要挤在小小的平房里，成长但一家人相处还算融洽。大民到了适婚年龄都没有结婚，是因为他一直喜欢邻居云芳。这时候云芳失恋了，大民默默陪伴安慰终于得到了云芳的芳心。两人婚后不久，大民的三弟也要结婚了。为了腾出更多的地方，大民推倒围墙建起了一间房间，以解决房间不够的问题。不久两人的孩子出生了，大民也更加忙起来了。身为长子的他又要帮忙兄弟姐妹解决生活上的不如意，大民依然以积极的态度面对生活。大民的厂里终于分配给他一套楼房，但一直期待拥有自己房间的小妹在这时候因患有绝症离世了，大民痛心不已……
